Cape Animal Welfare Forum

Pet Central has committed to working with CAWF registered organizations ONLY. Given the stringent requirements to become and remain a member of CAWF, it gives Pet Central the necessary comfort that we are dealing with credible and supported organisations. This comfort can be passed onto all of those utilising the Pet Central website to find and adopt their forever best friend! We are fortunate to have received the backing of CAWF.

CAWF originally started in 2006, when there came about a need for animal welfare organisations to work smarter, not harder! A few charities met informally to discuss the provision of clinics, campaigns and general needs within the animal welfare sector, particularly relating to the provision of mobile clinics within township and informal areas.

This enabled a collaborative approach by organisations who were able to support each other in a variety of ways, as well as developing healthy communications and attitudes to work that was required. In 2012, the City of Cape Town met with organisations and requested that CAWF became a constituted body, regulated and formalised in order to “speak with one voice” to the City. In response to this request, the CAPE ANIMAL WELFARE FORUM (CAWF) was born.

The Cape Animal Welfare Forum (CAWF) is an informal body of registered Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) working to regulate animal welfare in the Western Cape, and to sustain an effective partnership with the City of Cape Town and Provincial Government.

City Of Cape Town

Pet Central works with the City of Cape Town to achieve its mission of caring for animals, in particular by working with the Welfare Orgnisations in reducing homelessness through adoptions.

Cape Town has a large population of stray animals, the majority of which are dogs and cats.Animals can become stray for a number of reasons such as getting lost or abandoned. Interms of care, these animals do not receive the care and maintenance required and are ofteninjured and malnourished. These large animal populations pose a number of public health and safety risks, and the cost of caring, sterilizing and managing these populations is high and is mostly carried by NGO’s and NPO’s that are funded by the public.

The City recognises the value of the socio-economic and socio-cultural roles animals play andaims to facilitate the development of a culture of caring for, and protection of animals. The City has created the Animal Keeping Policy (2021) which seeks to introduce a few aspects of animal keeping that will enhance the overall care of animals, as well as address the public health and safety concerns associated with animals.
