Ben’s Bright Beginning: From Box to Best Friend
When Ben was first discovered, he was curled up inside a cardboard box at an Engineering Civil Depot near the Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha. Thin, hungry, and still managing to purr, he was gently scooped up by a kind passer-by and handed over to Mdzananda Animal Clinic where he was fed, dewormed, vaccinated, and treated for ticks and fleas. Within days, his eyes brightened and his energy returned. Soon, Ben was a playful, cheeky kitten winning over everyone at the clinic with his bold curiosity and affectionate nature.
A perfect match
Some time later, a six-year-old girl and her family contacted Pet Central, eager to extend their family. Our shelter liaison searched for the perfect match for their expanding family and came across dearest Ben at Mdzananda Adoption Clinic. The rest is history.
The moment Livi, the little girl met Ben, something clicked. Tiny paws reached out, little hands reached back, and it was clear they were meant for each other. Pet Central sent along a kitten starter box filled with all the essentials (and a few joyful extras) to help Ben settle into his new home.

Learning care through companionship
Ben now lives in Paarl, where cuddles, belly rubs, and giggles fill the day. For children, sharing life with a pet is more than playtime, it is a quiet form of learning. Studies show that cat companionship helps build empathy, social skills, and emotional intelligence, and it can even reduce stress for both kids and adults.
Simple routines like feeding, brushing, and reading aloud to a calm cat nurture responsibility, confidence, and patience. For one little girl, Ben has become both a best friend and a gentle teacher, showing how kindness and care can grow side by side.

Why pets and children make magic together
- Pets can support empathy, compassion, and confidence in children.
- Time with animals is linked to lower stress and calmer moods.
- Positive pet relationships encourage social and emotional growth
